The Life of a Social Media Manager
Hi friends, my name is Emily and I am a Social Media Manager at Roys Digital Media! I absolutely love my job and am so excited to give you the inside scoop on what it is like stepping into the shoes of a Social Media Manager. First and foremost, I reside in Dallas, Texas, and I work 100% remotely. The rest of the team works between Houston and Los Angeles. As we continue to grow, one of my favorite perks of being a Social Media Manager is that I can do my job from just about anywhere while still being as productive as an in-person employee. As digital marketers who don’t limit ourselves to specific industries, we get to work with a wide variety of businesses, from bridal boutiques, and immigration lawyers, to high-end jewelers, oil and gas companies, and beyond. I have quickly learned the importance of becoming educated in any industry we work with during my time at RDM. It has been such a great learning experience getting to research and understand the different types of brand voices and levels of professionalism needed for each industry. You may think all we do is come up with cute, trendy content for our clients, but our day-to-day goes far beyond that…
Behind every TikTok, Instagram post, and website is hours of strategy and planning. At RDM, we work on a month-to-month basis; at the beginning of each month, we take about three weeks to plan for the following month for all accounts. Every client is unique and receives different services, but a typical month includes starting off with a client vision meeting to go over upcoming things to promote, an internal strategy of what we will do to accomplish these things, and gathering inspiration for content. Throughout this process, we look at what did well the previous month, create mood boards on Pinterest, study trends, research competitors and plan for the content shoot. Once our strategy is complete and our content creator has provided us with the assets from the content shoot, it is time for the Social Media Managers to get to work on planning out that content! This includes the feed view, captions, Instagram stories, reels, and TikToks. Personally, my favorite part of planning a month’s worth of content is getting to create the feed view. At the end of the month, we get to review the previous month’s analytics and apply it to the next month’s strategy. It’s always refreshing to take a break from the creative side of your brain.
This may sound like the easiest job ever, right? Who wouldn’t want to be on social media all day for a living? You’re right, it is a dream! But somedays it can be hard to feel creative and come up with new ideas. This can be really defeating. You may start to feel burned out by continuously writing captions and coming up with ideas for stories. I totally get it! Some ways that help me reset are: taking a walk, making myself a mid-day snack or coffee, sitting outside, changing my scenery, and playing with my dog!
Working in the service industry comes with managing clients’ high expectations and always creating something new. This is what I love most about this job. There is always room for me to grow, improve, learn something new, and think outside of the box. It has stretched me and allowed me to view social media in a whole new way. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work for Roys Digital Media and cannot wait for all the growth ahead.
