How To Be Productive While Working From Home

Hi everyone! It’s Emily again, and I am excited to share all of my tips and tricks with you regarding staying productive while working from home. I have been working fully remote, five days a week, for almost five months now. Working from home has its many benefits like not having to commute to work on those cozy rainy mornings, staying home with your dog, having the ability to stay in comfy clothes, and cooking yourself lunch in the middle of the day (the list goes on and on). However, I understand that some days it can feel difficult to stay productive and motivated when you are not in an official office space and surrounded by your coworkers.

Here are some of the ways I have created an at-home routine to stay productive on those days I feel unmotivated to work in the comfort of my own home.

Wake up early enough to have a morning routine before you start work. This is one of the most important steps for me so that I don’t start my day by walking straight into my office and getting on a Zoom call. For me, this means waking up an hour earlier to go on a walk, have my morning coffee, get any misc. home tasks done, and read.

  • Create a designated office space. Even if this is your kitchen table, make sure you set up your laptop or monitor in a certain space. I know that it sounds enticing to work from bed, but I promise you won’t feel as productive there!

  • If you work on a laptop, get yourself a laptop stand, mouse, and keyboard. Here are my favorites from Amazon:

  • Get dressed! You don’t have to put on a fancy work outfit, but at least change out of your pajamas.

  • Write out all of your to-do’s on a piece of paper in order of highest to lowest priority. It will help you manage your time and keep you motivated as you cross things off your list.

  • Take small breaks throughout the day. This is so important as I understand it can feel monotonous and isolating to sit in front of a screen in the same spot all day. I take breaks by taking my dog on a walk, sitting outside, making a snack or coffee in the kitchen, throwing in a load of laundry, or doing the dishes!

  • Play music in the background. This helps me focus and not feel so lonely in my home!

  • When you’re tired of your house, take advantage of the coffee shops around you for a change of scenery.

The most important part of all of these tips is to stay disciplined with them! It may take time to get used to, but creating a routine for yourself will keep your days structured. Personally, I am so grateful for the opportunity to work remotely as it gives me so much flexibility and allows me to feel like I have a much healthier work-life balance. On top of that, I feel so lucky to have a team who stays connected through phone calls, slack communications, and Zoom all day long. Even though I am in a different city than most of my team, I still feel like I have created personal relationships with all of my coworkers and don’t feel so isolated during the work day because of this. While working from home may not be for everyone, I hope you found these tips helpful! Stay tuned for more.

Xoxo, Emily
